Confronting Models with Data
نویسنده
چکیده
APRIL 2003 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | T he use of data to evaluate models is fundamental to science. Ideally, evaluations can be controlled and optimized in the laboratory; in most cases, however, atmospheric scientists have to perform model–data intercomparisons by taking advantage of the uncontrolled opportunities that nature provides. A model-evaluation project is complicated in at least two distinct ways. The technical complexities are obvious and daunting: Data must be collected and analyzed, models must be developed and run, and the two sets of numbers must be brought into meaningful juxtaposition. This is hard enough. An additional and equally complex task, however, is to foster communication and fruitful interactions among the diverse scientific communities whose cooperation and combined expertise are needed in order to carry out the technical work. The Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Cloud System Study (GCSS) is a case in point. GCSS was organized in the early 1990s by K. Browning and colleagues (Browning et al. 1993, 1994). The challenges that arise as GCSS brings observations and models together are a microcosm of challenges that face all of atmospheric science. Over a period of years, GCSS has devised what we call the “GCSS process” a mode of operation that appears to optimize its scientific productivity. The GCSS process was devised partly through trial and error and partly through introspection. The primary purpose of this article is to outline the key elements of the GCSS proCONFRONTING MODELS WITH DATA

متن کاملConfronting the economic model with the data
Econometrics is about confronting economic models with the data. In doing so it is crucial to choose a statistical model that not only contains the economic model as a submodel, but also contains the data generating process. When this is the case, the statistical model can be analyzed by likelihood methods. When this is not the case, but likelihood methods are applied nonetheless, the result is...
متن کاملMethods of Data Analysis Probabilistic models and inference
One of the basic tasks in data analysis is in confronting parametric models with data: this consists of inferring the parameters of the model from data, and subsequently checking how well the model (with the inferred parameters) predicts new phenomena, or at least how well it performs on a repeat of the same experiment. How inference is done depends in practice very much in the tradition of the...
متن کاملConfronting quintessence models with recent high-redshift supernovae data
We confront the predictions of different quintessence models with recent measurements of the luminosity distance from two sets of supernovae type Ia. In particular, we consider the 157 SNe Ia in the Gold dataset with z < 1:7, and the more recent data containing 71 supernovae obtained by the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS) with z < 1. We numerically solve the evolution equations for the Ratra-Pee...

Background and purpose: The incidence of cancer is increasing in everyone especially old people. Due to the hardly curable nature of cancer those who confront with its diagnosis are highly influenced by concerns and distress. Hence, a better understanding of such concerns will help health care staff to plan for effective care. This study was designed to investigate the main concerns of elderly ...

The AACR-NCI Conference "Systems Biology: Confronting the Complexity of Cancer" took place from February 27 to March 2, 2011, in San Diego, CA. Several themes resonated during the meeting, notably (i) the need for better methods to distill insights from large-scale networks, (ii) the importance of integrating multiple data types in constructing more realistic models, (iii) challenges in transla...
